Lightning Sprite Media was founded in February 2016 by brand creator and creative producer: Daniel Bays
Dan is an avid gamer, technology nut, animation collector and inquisitive, curious, ideas thinker-upper, developer and producer of multi-platform wonderments with 15 years experience developing and producing groundbreaking content and award-winning international brands at the BBC.
Creative development at the heart of everything:
In 2000, after graduating in Biology, Dan won one of 5 jobs in BBC Science’s new ‘Ideas Lab’ – creating and developing shows, brands and formats for BBC Science and Factual Entertainment.
Leaping into Production, Dan spent 4 years making documentaries and factual telly for the BBC. Highlights included: self-shooting on an ambulance for 3 months for Trauma; filming a giraffe having his toenails cut (with a chainsaw) for Super Vets; convincing the women of a Linconshire village to leave their homes while filming what happened to the men for The Week The Women Went and working on Tomorrow’s World – the UK’s number one technology show for 38 years (a personal goal since the age of 10).
In 2006 Daniel jumped at the opportunity to be part of a new Factual Entertainment development team in BBC Children’s, going on to develop, win commissions for and produce big new ideas, interactive digital experiences and brands – live-action and animation – for all platforms in both CBBC and CBeebies, including:
Serious Explorers (CBBC) – where a team of children follow in the footsteps of the greatest ever explorers. 2 seasons: Livingstone, Raleigh
Tree Fu Tom (CBeebies & Fremantle Media Kids & Family) – twice BAFTA-nominated, physically interactive, international hit preschool animated series (22 mins) and immersive companion games suite produced in parallel as a multiplatform production. Dan was Series Producer and Show-Runner of Tree Fu Tom for 3 seasons. In mid-2016, ep 72 will be completed.
In 2014, Dan stepped off Tree Fu Tom to develop a new landmark, multiplatform CG animated series called, ‘Bitz and Bob’ which was commissioned by CBeebies and rolled in to production in June 2016 (CBeebies & Fremantle Media Kids and Family co-production).
In ‘Bitz & Bob’ we join the amazing adventures of older sister, Bitz, and younger brother, Bob, as they make awesome things to play with and then dive into a shared world of imagination where their creations and toys come to life. Epic, comical adventures unfold and challenges arise that lead Bitz to have to literally invent a way to save the day.
With two brilliant experts working behind the scenes – Helen Heggie of STEMFirst and Dr Lisa Regalla of Maker Ed – each 11 min animated episode and 4 min mixed-media companion show will explore STEAM principles (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art&Design and Mathematics), aim to demystify and debunk misconceptions about engineers and engineering and hopefully inspire and empower a new generation of children – particularly girls – to become Makers, innovators, Inventors and Engineers.
After securing the commission for Bitz and Bob, Dan left the BBC to set up Lightning Sprite Media Ltd.
